DetailsThe British Rail Class 59 is a fleet of powerful Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division in Illinois between 1985 and 1995. A total of 15 locomotives were constructed in three subclasses, making them the first privately owned diesels to run regularly on Britain’s mainline. Originally ordered by Foster Yeoman, these Class 59/0 engines were designed for heavy aggregate haulage. Their cab layout drew on the existing Class 58 design to help British crews adapt. Their reliability proved exceptional — achieving availability rates close to 99%, which revolutionised freight operations. Success soon bred imitation: ARC (later Hanson) and National Power each acquired their own variants, designated Class 59/1 and 59/2 respectively. During its career, one member even operated in Germany before returning to the UK. While more advanced locomotives like the Class 66 would later arrive, the Class 59 remains highly respected for its pioneering role in UK private-owner freight traction. |
