DetailsBetween 1941 and 1942, the German Wehrmacht introduced four double locomotives of the D 311 type, specifically designed for transporting heavy railway guns. Two of these, V 188 001 a/b and V 188 002 a/b, continued service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn after the war, while a third locomotive was used as a spare parts donor. These powerful locomotives excelled in heavy freight and push-pull operations, particularly on the challenging Spessart ramp. V 188 001 was retired in 1968 following a generator failure, and V 188 002, later renumbered 288 002, served in the Franconian region until 1972. Both locomotives were eventually scrapped in 1973, leaving a lasting legacy among German heavy-duty diesel locomotives. |
