DetailsBetween 1941 and 1942, four double locomotives of the D 311 type were introduced by the German Wehrmacht, specifically designed for hauling heavy railway guns. After the war, two units, V 188 001 a/b and V 188 002 a/b, continued in service with the German Federal Railway, while a third locomotive was used as a source of spare parts. These powerful machines demonstrated their reliability in heavy freight and push-pull operations, particularly on the demanding Spessart ramp. V 188 001 was withdrawn in 1968 after a generator failure, while V 188 002, later renumbered 288 002, remained active in the Franconian region until 1972. Both locomotives were scrapped in 1973, leaving a legacy as some of the most distinctive German diesel locomotives of their era. |
