DetailsTo address the need for powerful shunting locomotives, the German Federal Railway (DB) introduced the Class V 60 series in the mid-1950s. These versatile diesel locomotives became a common sight in almost every German marshalling yard, performing essential duties in both shunting and light freight operations. The V 60 locomotives could reach speeds of up to 30 km/h in shunting mode and 60 km/h on the mainline, making them both nimble and efficient. In the early 1990s, the DB explored repowering some units with modern engines to extend their service life. By 1997, locomotives that had already been converted to radio-controlled operation were fitted with Caterpillar engines and redesignated as Class 363. Celebrated for their reliability, adaptability, and long service, the V 60 and its upgraded Class 363 variants remain iconic examples of post-war German diesel shunting locomotives. |
