DetailsAt the International Transport Exhibition in Munich in 1965, the German Federal Railway (DB) showcased trains operating at speeds of up to 200 km/h for the first time. This milestone was achieved using four Class E 03 locomotives, which were subsequently employed for both high-speed test runs and to haul particularly fast TEE and F trains. With the delivery of the Class 103.1 series, the pre-series E 03 locomotives were gradually reassigned to test operations. From the summer of 1974, all pre-series 103s were based at the Hamburg-Eidelstedt depot, supporting express services to destinations including Nuremberg, Munich, Lüneburg, Hanover, Hildesheim, and Bremen. Although long-distance regular services were gradually discontinued, the locomotives occasionally hauled unscheduled express trains. By the autumn of 1979, the Class 103.0 locomotives were retired from regular service and permanently transferred to the Deutsche Bundesbahn's test service, cementing their role as pioneering high-speed locomotives in German railway history. |
