DetailsInitially, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) relied on older electric locomotives such as the E 04, E 44, and E 94 for its electrified lines. As these locomotives became increasingly inadequate for growing traffic demands, LEW in Henningsdorf was commissioned to design a new electric locomotive capable of handling both express and freight services. The result was the E 11 for express trains and the E 42 for freight trains, distinguished by a modified gear ratio. From 1961 to 1977, a total of 387 locomotives of the E 11/E 42 series were delivered to the DR. The first production series, built in 1962 and 1963, featured four double fan grilles and stiffening beads in the frame, reflecting careful engineering and structural reinforcement. Celebrated for their versatility, reliability, and distinctive design, the E 11/E 42 locomotives became a cornerstone of DR’s electric operations, efficiently serving both passenger and freight traffic across the network. |
