Model Railway Christmas Items

STUART JORDAN looks at the items available to give your layout a touch of Christmas.

Christmas is not far away. It does seem like it is coming earlier each year, but it's hard to ignore now we are approaching the start of Advent. Try as you might, even the most curmudgeonly Scrooge out there will have to put up the tinsel and the tree.

Those of you whose hearts are filled with Christmas joy may wish to modify your layout (or even build a new themed layout) to represent the season. I'll be looking at some of the items available to transform your model railway into a winter wonderland.

SNOW

Although the chances of a White Christmas are slim (in the UK at least), that doesn't mean your branch line can't get a dusting. Deluxe Materials produce a few snow products, representing freshly fallen snow and shovelled snow that can even be formed into snowmen!

Icicles from Noch let you create icicles straight out of the tube!

FIGURES

No Christmas layout is proper without Father Christmas himself, and he can be found in HO/OO Scale from Preiser.

Why not add something a bit different? The donkeys from the Nativity? or The Queen giving her Christmas Speech?

TREES

Noch produce snow-covered trees in HO/OO Scale and N Scale, as well as an illuminated tree in Z Scale! You can of course use the snow effects mentioned earlier to give existing trees a dusting.

HOLIDAYS ARE COMING?

A certain fizzy drinks manufacturer starts running a long-standing ad campaign this time of year, featuring a familiar lorry. Oxford Diecast reproduce it in OO Scale.

LOCOMOTIVES AND ROLLING STOCK

Many companies produce specific starter sets, locomotives, and rolling stock on a Christmas or winter theme.

Marklin produce a few Christmas Themed Z Scale sets, which are great if space is a premium.

The Piko G Scale Christmas Starter Set is perfect for going round the bottom of the Christmas Tree. If you are lucky enough to get some snow on your outdoors G Scale layout, LGB produce a Snowplough!

For something a bit different on HO/OO layouts, Roco produce a range of Snowblowers. They are DCC-Fitted with sound, but thats not all. As well as all the usual lights, and bells and whistles, you can make the snowblower blades turn, and move the front part of the blower up and down!
