Rolling Road Rundown

Greg Spears

GREG SPEARS takes us through Rolling Roads; what is available now, and what has been available in the past.

Rolling Roads

First up is the all-singing, all dancing Roco SmartRail, probably the most sophisticated road we have seen to date. This unit is controlled by the Z21 digital control system, and the locomotive sits on two rotating conductive bands. Infra-red sensors at each end control the speed of the bands, making sure that the locomotive doesn't crash! This is definately a digital show-stopper, but probably more akin to to an office toy than for running in locos.

Rolling Roads

A bit dull but good value is the Hornby R8211 Rolling Road for OO/HO Scales.

Rolling Roads

Next up we have the smallest scale but equally useful Z Scale road from Marklin. When the loco is that small, keeping it still is the only way to go. This road is available with either four or eight rollers, depending on the length of your locos.

Rolling Roads

Last, and by no means least, from our friends in Australia we have the immensely popular and bestselling DCC Concepts Rolling Road. This multi-gauge set will run anything from N Scale up to OO, including everything inbetween like TT Scale and the various Narrow Gauges. It's innovative design means that all you need is a straight piece of track to set the rollers onto, and it will run off of your existing control unit. Both Active and Passive sets are available, the active rollers go under the driven wheels and the passive rollers support the undriven wheels. A twelve-pack of rollers is also available for really looong locomotives.

The Past

Rolling Roads

Some of you may remember this unit, no longer in production but highly collectable is our model LT (Loco Tester).

Rolling Roads

It did have a small revival a few years back as a promotional unit for the DCC Concept Road though!

Rolling Roads

Shown above is the ultra-rare Gaugemaster Controller counter display unit which was made for model shops, not sure if many of these exist out there on any shop counters, and even our own one is sadly missing its brass buffer rods!

Rolling Roads

So you might be wondering how the original started, well let’s just say it had a lot to do with the needle bearings from a Renault 5 drive shaft...

Greg is our Head Technician here at Gaugemaster, and knows our controllers inside and out. Mainly because he designed both the inside and outside...
