Vollmer Update 2016

Julian Lilley looks at new and established items from Vollmer.

Vollmer were founded eighty years ago in Germany, with range of thirteen items of model catenary. Since then the range has now expanded to around one-thousand different high precision plastic model railway buildings, and other scenic accessories. The Vollmer range is mainly in HO/OO and N with a few options in other scales like TT, Z and G.

In 2014 the brand was taken over by Viessmann which is a natural progression, as many of their ranges compliment the Vollmer building such as lighting and sound effects, and their automated door motors. Since the takeover the products have been rebranded in bright modern packaging with clear illustrations showing what comes in the box.

The mouldings are exceptionally detailed producing very crisp detail. As in real buildings often the brick work will have the occasional rough finish which really adds to the realism. Add some weathering and you will have a stunning lifelike model.

Just to tempt you I have listed below some ideas that would be suitable for both British and Continental Layouts.

VO46889 HO/OO Half Timbered House under Construction Kit

One of the first new items to arrive this year is this house under construction kit which comes complete with scaffolding, ladders and racks of timber frames. Either one or several, in different stages of assembly, would add a lot of interest to any layout. Mix these with the various animated bricklayers, painters and throw in a Mercedes Cement Mixer with Rotating Drum from Viessmann's e-Motion range, and you will have a real scenic centrepiece.

A great little inexpensive kit, again by using one or several would add height and interest to an old industrial scene - or scratchbuilt into another building.

Above are two fine examples of loco sheds, one more traditional steam era, and the other a superb modern version that I particularly like.

VO43804 HO/OO Multi Storey Car Park

One of my favourite Vollmer items for adding depth and interest to a modern layout is their multi storey car park, which you can also use to store you collection of diecast cars! This building is a must have model on any urban layout, as these car parks can be found in any large town or city. The model comes complete with entrance and exit barriers, ticket booths and lots of external details.

See the images above for versions of this kit that has been seriously weathered, which were used art of a Modern Art work by James Cauty. There were also a few thousand Preiser policemen each one being individually altered!

Bring your layout up to date with either of these Mc Donald’s restaurants. No Big Macs included. These are one of the truly universal kits, as they are worldwide. A drive-through restaurant version is also available in HO/OO Scale and N Scale.

N Scale

VO47605 N Scale Modern Engine Shed with Automated Doors

This modern engine shed has automated doors, which open automatically when a locomotive approaches. This adds an extra level of movement and interest to your layout.

VO47668 N Scale Swimming Pool Kit

Make a splash on your layout which could feature as a park scene, or part of a hotel complex. This kit is also available in HO/OO Scale.

This is another universally adaptable item, you can either use the signage provided in the kit, or create your own more localised version and print them out yourself.
