DetailsThe NER E Class 0-6-0 Tank Locomotive, later designated J71 by the LNER, was designed by Thomas W. Worsdell for the North Eastern Railway as a standard shunting engine. Introduced in 1886, a total of 120 were built—60 under Thomas’s direction and 60 more under his brother Wilson Worsdell, who succeeded him in 1890. Production ended in 1895, with Wilson introducing a modified version, the E1 Class, in 1898. The E Class featured larger driving wheels and smaller cylinders than the E1, resulting in more prominent splashers. Early locomotives had smaller coal bunkers without coal rails, which were later added. Initially equipped with clack valves, Ramsbottom safety valves, and bell whistles, later updates brought Ross Pop valves, tubular whistles, and the removal of clack valves to align with E1 specifications. Original metal bufferbeams were often replaced with a wooden-core, metal-faced style in later years. These versatile engines served across the North East, excelling in dockyard, freight, and station pilot duties. Their compact design suited tight curves and lighter trackwork. All 120 passed to the LNER in 1923, but by 1948 only 81 remained, gradually replaced by the newer J72s (formerly E1s). |
