Details

The British Rail Class 414, also known as the 2-HAP, was a two-car electric multiple unit introduced between 1957 and 1963. Designed for 90mph operation, these units formed part of the Southern Region’s express fleet and could work in combination with other EMUs, including the Class 411 4-CEP.

The designation evolved from the earlier 2-HAL units, with the “P” denoting the inclusion of electro-pneumatic brakes. The first batch of Class 414s shared much of their equipment with the 4-EPB and 2-EPB units built in 1951, and could be identified by roof-mounted lighting conduits and full-length step boards. Later batches incorporated updated control gear, different bogie designs and eventually a revised cab end with a smaller headcode panel.

Originally numbered 6001–6173, the fleet was later classified under the TOPS system as Class 414, with sub-classes 414/2 for earlier builds and 414/3 for later versions. Withdrawals commenced in 1982, largely due to asbestos removal costs, though a number of units were retained in service until the final withdrawals in 1995.
