Details

The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway’s E4 Class was part of a family of 0-6-2 ‘Radial’ Tanks designed for mixed traffic duties. Introduced in 1897 under Robert Billinton, 75 locomotives were built at Brighton Works over six years. With their versatile design, the E4s worked across passenger and freight services and later found employment as station pilots, including at London Waterloo.

Following Grouping in 1923, all locomotives passed to the Southern Railway and later to British Railways in 1948. Withdrawals began in the 1950s, with the final examples lasting until 1963. One locomotive, No. 473 “Birch Grove”, has been preserved and remains a highlight of the Bluebell Railway collection.
