Details

The British Rail Class 150 ‘Sprinter’ is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) built by BREL at York between 1984 and 1987 as part of the second generation of DMUs intended to replace ageing first generation stock. A total of 137 units were constructed in three subclasses. Two prototype sets, designated Class 150/0, were delivered in 1984 to test design features ahead of full production.

The first production batch, Class 150/1, comprised 50 two-car sets built between 1986 and 1987. These units lacked front-end corridor connections, limiting passenger movement when operating in multiple. Initially concentrated around Birmingham and Manchester, they became familiar on suburban and commuter services and today are largely based with Northern, working routes across the North West of England.

The larger final batch, 85 sets classified Class 150/2, differed by incorporating corridor connections, making them better suited for longer-distance regional services. These units were widely deployed across Britain, working in Scotland, Wales, the West Country and the North.

Despite the arrival of newer rolling stock, Class 150s remain in frontline service thanks to their reliability and versatility, and continue to form a core part of regional fleets more than 35 years after their introduction.
