DetailsSince the Tokaido Shinkansen began service in 1964, the iconic 0 Series Shinkansen evolved through a series of improvements and minor updates until 1986. The final variant, the 2000 Series, was introduced in 1981, with a total of 309 cars manufactured. Based on the 1000 Series, the 2000 Series featured smaller side windows and an increased seat pitch for enhanced passenger comfort. After the transition to JR, all 2000 Series cars were operated by JR Central and JR West until their retirement in 2008.
