DetailsThe Class HGe 4/4 II is a narrow-gauge electric locomotive designed for both cogwheel and adhesion operation, first introduced in 1985 for the Furka Oberalp Railway and the SBB on the Brünig line. With an output of 1,932 kW (around 2,600 horsepower), a top speed of 100 km/h on conventional track and 40 km/h on rack sections, it set new performance standards for mountain railways. Following excellent results, further locomotives were delivered from 1990, with the SBB and FO each operating eight units and the Brig Visp Zermatt Railway five. Today, they remain in active service with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, handling Glacier Express trains between Zermatt and Disentis as well as automobile shuttles through the Furka Tunnel. Recent overhauls have introduced modernised electronics, LED headlights and other upgrades, ensuring these locomotives continue to provide reliable service across the Swiss Alps for years to come. |
