DetailsThe Dutch State Railways (NS) 500 series consisted of 45 robust diesel-electric locomotives introduced from 1946. The first ten units, numbered 501 to 510, were delivered to the Netherlands shortly after the Second World War through the British Army’s War Department. These reliable three-axle locomotives were primarily employed for shunting duties at major stations including Utrecht, Zwolle and Rotterdam Feijenoord. Thanks to their dependable performance, the NS expanded the fleet with additional locomotives numbered 511 to 545. Initially finished in olive green, the locomotives were later repainted in yellow-grey during the 1970s. Today, four Rh 500 locomotives remain preserved in Dutch museums, highlighting their historical significance and enduring legacy in rail transport. - Post-War Heritage: Early units supplied via the British Army’s War Department immediately after World War II.
- Diesel-Electric Reliability: Three-axle locomotives widely used for efficient shunting services at key Dutch stations.
- Expanded Fleet: Additional locomotives added due to proven operational success.
