DetailsThe BR 62 emerged from the Reichsbahn Central Office’s initiative to develop a series of standardised locomotives suitable for various operational needs. Drawing inspiration from the never-built BR 20, it was designed as a fast two-cylinder superheated steam tender locomotive featuring a 2C2 axle configuration. The manufacturing contract was awarded to Henschel, which produced a total of 15 locomotives in 1928. Initially, only locomotives 62 001 and 62 002 were taken into service by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) and operated primarily in the Ruhr area. The remaining 13 units were introduced to service later, in 1932. - Standardised Design: Developed as part of the Reichsbahn’s effort to create versatile locomotives for multiple uses.
- Innovative Engineering: Based on the unbuilt BR 20, featuring a two-cylinder superheated steam engine and 2C2 axle arrangement.
- Manufactured by Henschel: A total of 15 locomotives produced in 1928, showcasing quality German engineering.
- Operational History: The first two locomotives served in the Ruhr area, with the rest entering service in 1932.
- Historic Significance: Represents an important chapter in the development of fast, standardised steam locomotives in Germany.
