DetailsThe E 44 series was the first German electric locomotive of which more than 100 units were built, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of electric traction. As the first larger mainline locomotive to dispense with running axles and adopt the proven axle-hung motor drive, it set new standards for performance and reliability. Celebrated as a versatile and robust workhorse, the E 44 shaped electric train operations across southern and central Germany from the 1930s through the 1980s. In 1963, the converted E 44 188 entered service, based on the Höllentalbahn locomotive E 244 11. Externally, it differed from the standard series with two enlarged front windows, double-nozzle ventilation grilles, sliding windows, repositioned doors, an extended roof, and modern DBS 54 pantographs. A must-have for collectors of historic German electric locomotives, this model captures both the technical innovation and distinctive styling that made the E 44 an enduring icon of German railway history. |
