The diesel-electric, four-axle bogie locomotives of the 2200 series of the Dutch State Railways (NS) shaped the time of the traction change from steam to diesel locomotives in their procurement years from 1955 to 1958. Together with the 2400 series, 280 units were put into service. With their one-sided final driver's cabs and long stems, the machines embodied an American design. However, the NS machines were manufactured exclusively by Western European companies.
