With the introduction of direct current electrification on the Italian railway network in the late 1920s, the Italian State Railways required powerful new electric locomotives. Developed as an advancement of the E.326, the high-performance E.428 locomotives were produced in a total of 242 units between 1934 and 1943. These versatile locomotives were widely used throughout the entire peninsula. The series is typically divided into three groups: the first 122 machines featured a central superstructure with two front ends, followed by the second semi-aerodynamic series and the third aerodynamic series.
