COACHES 1923-33
From 1923-28 most coaches had LMS in the waist panel near the centrewith the number towards each end but rarely at the extreme end in smallX serif style figures - LMS in 4" size on most coaches but 3" on manypre-group vehicles with limited waist panel depth and on manynon-passenger coaching stock vehicles, e.g., fish and milk vans. From1929 the number appeared once only towards the right hand end of thecoach with L M S towards the left. From 1929.32 the larger 'stretched'shaded numbers were used. The unshaded block numbers were used onrenumbered and new coaches from 1932. The round coat of arms was usedon many end-door corridor and open coaches (often not on third classcoaches) and on most saloons. Dining can etc., with waist panels hadthe wording in the panel with the coat of arms below. Flush sidedcoaches had the coat of arms in the lower part of the side with thewords spaced either side opt Passenger doors other than on unclassedrestaurant can carried class figures 1 or 3. Shaded yellow insignia,(1934.48) is on Sheet 2 and the plain straw 1946-47 block style is onSheet 2a. The window labels 'SMOKING' cannot be included in this sheetfor reasons of space. LOCOMOTIVES 1923-27
Locos were numbered in black-shaded figures in 18" size on most largertenders and tanks of some larger tank engines. Most tank engines andsome smaller tenders had 14" size numbers. Red engines had the verysmall L M S on cabsides during 1923 and the round coat of arms 1924.28.Black engines had the red and gold L M S panel on the cabsides, theconcave cornered type being the earlier pattern. Unshaded power classfigures represent the brass ones on MR locos - others used the shadedpattern. Tank locos rarely had thorn before 1928, Letters P and Fintroduced at the same time,
LOCOMOTIVES 1928-38
Most red engines had black shadedinsignia. some of the Compounds and most lined black engines had redshaded insignia. Unlined black engines not painted at Crewe used blackshaded gold transfers. Company identity after 1927 was usuallyindicated by L M S on the tender. Spacing varied. The largest, 60"centres, was used mainly on Stonier curved top tenders; the next, 53"centres was on most large pre-group tank locos, many Deeley, Fowler andScottish pro-group benders and Horwich painted tenders. The closestspacing on the sheet, 40" centres, appeared on most ex-LNWR Johnson andKirtley tenders, some Fowler tenders and on standard 2-6-4T and 2-6-2Tlocos. On Garratts and small tank locos with 27" or closer spacing cutand fit letters separately. Royal Scots and un-stream lined Pacifieshad 14" cabside nos, Princess Royals, Jubilees and most Compounds had12* . 10" numbers were used on some Compounds, engines with small cabsand at St. Rollox works, on a wide variety of locos. New locos built byCrewe, Derby and outside contractors during 1936-38 and the streamlinedused block style insignia. for reasons of space this is included inSheet 2a, together with the 1946.47 block insignia and the plain strawserif style insignia used by Crewe works on all plain black enginesfrom 1928. NOTE: To save space some of the coats of arms are printedbetween the loco letters. If the latter are required first, cut throughthe tissue round the coats of arms so as to leave them on the backingpaper. Sheet 2 includes the red-shaded and plain yellow insignia of1938.47. |
