DetailsOriginally built at Crewe Works in August 1933 as No. 5901, this locomotive was later renumbered 5540 and went on to receive a Stanier taper boiler in October 1947. The upgrade increased its power classification from 6P to 7P, enhancing its performance for express passenger duties. Renumbered 45540 under British Railways in May 1948, it remained in service until April 1963 and was scrapped later that year. The locomotive carried the distinguished name ‘Sir Robert Turnbull’, inherited from withdrawn ‘Large Claughton’ No. 1161, commemorating the former General Manager of the London and North Western Railway, who was knighted in 1913. |
