DetailsBuilt by British Rail Engineering at Crewe between 1973 and 1975, thirty-six of these 25kV 5,000hp locomotives were introduced as a high-performance evolution of the Class 86, designed for express work on the West Coast Main Line with continuous operation at speeds up to 110mph. Locomotive 87012 entered service in January 1974 and became widely recognised for its later names, ‘Coeur de Lion’ and ‘The Olympian’. Following withdrawal in 2006, it was exported to Bulgaria in 2007 for trials, after which it joined the remaining fleet in freight service. Today, it continues to operate under BZK, representing a significant chapter in modern British electric locomotive development. |
