DetailsThe Bavarian Pt 2/3 class locomotive was a distinctive light tank engine designed for passenger service, renowned for its elegant proportions and innovative features. Characterised by its slender boiler, spacious driver’s cab, and the unusually large 4,000 mm distance between the running axle and coupled wheels, it represented a unique development in early 20th-century locomotive design. One of the most notable aspects of the Pt 2/3 was the rear access door, which allowed the stoker to move directly into the train and take on the duties of conductor when required. This practical and forward-thinking design reflected the versatile nature of these locomotives. Built by Krauss in Munich, the series entered service with the Bavarian State Railway between 1909 and 1916, with all units classified as type 1 B h2 and capable of reaching a top speed of 65 km/h. The Pt 2/3 class remains a celebrated example of Bavarian engineering, combining functionality, style, and efficiency in a locomotive that served faithfully across the region’s passenger network. |
