DetailsTo accelerate the transition to diesel traction, the German Reichsbahn (DR) acquired a total of 378 Class V 200 locomotives (later reclassified as Class 120) between 1966 and 1975. Built in the Soviet Union, these powerful diesel engines were primarily deployed for freight train service, as they were not fitted with factory-installed train heating for passenger duties. Renowned for their distinctive and loud engine noise, these locomotives quickly earned the nickname "Taiga Drum." Despite their auditory presence, the V 200/Class 120 series proved to be robust and reliable workhorses, playing a key role in modernising DR’s freight operations during the late 20th century. The Class V 200 remains a notable example of East German diesel engineering, celebrated for its strength, durability, and the unmistakable sound that earned it legendary status among railway enthusiasts. |
