DetailsThe T 478.1 series is a versatile diesel-electric universal locomotive, widely recognised for its iconic "Bardotka" design. Between 1966 and 1971, a total of 230 locomotives were built for the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) at the CKD factory in Prague. These powerful engines reach a top speed of 100 km/h, with a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 1,500 hp. In the 1990s, the 749 series was created by converting the 751 and 752 locomotives to electric train heating, without making significant changes to the original design. This modification allowed the Bardotkas to be used more economically on shorter trains, making them suitable for both passenger and freight services throughout the Czech Republic. Celebrated for their reliability, performance, and distinctive appearance, the T 478.1 and its 749 variants remain an important part of Czech railway history and diesel-electric traction development. |
