DetailsInitially, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) relied on older electric locomotives such as the E 04, E 44, and E 94 for its electrified lines. As these became increasingly insufficient for growing rail traffic, LEW in Henningsdorf was commissioned to develop a new electric locomotive capable of handling both express and freight services. The resulting design, with a modified gear ratio, was classified as the E 11 for express trains and the E 42 for freight trains. From 1961 to 1977, a total of 387 locomotives of the E 11/E 42 series were delivered to the DR. The first production units, built in 1962 and 1963, featured four double fan grilles and stiffening beads in the frame, reflecting careful engineering and attention to structural detail. Renowned for their versatility, reliability, and distinctive design, the E 11/E 42 series became a cornerstone of DR’s electric operations, serving both passenger and freight traffic efficiently across the network. |
