Container loading can be a cinch: Simply leave it to the sideloader, which uses its fork to pick up 40' containers with perfect ease. This was reason enough for WIKING to release a second version from new moulds and with a matching DB design. WIKING founder Fritz Peltzer became fascinated with the container theme as early as the sixties, when containers had just started to flourish in the ports on the North Sea coast. At the time, no one could have foreseen how rapidly the demand for the standardized logistics boxes was to grow. Peltzer was, at any rate, right with his assessment. Numerous semi-trailers were released on the 1:87 scale in rapid succession and were accompanied by the creation of the original model of the sideloader. What is more, the Lancer Boss sideloader served as the prototype for the implementation of the 1:87-scale miniature. Back then, the original operated in the long-goods logistics environment and was used for loading containers, pipes and construction timber. The feature that made the original model especially appealing - and even spectacular on the 1:87 scale - to the WIKING head was the lateral orientation of forklift mast and fork. Nearly five decades went by before the necessary mould construction came to fruition in WIKING’s anniversary year - in hindsight, perfectly timed for the right occasion. Chassis and glazed cab have, naturally, been modelled precisely after the original. All of the hydraulic movements the former sideloader was able to perform can be imitated. The model offers options for creating entirely new scenes, providing stimulating ideas for WIKING fans and diorama builders alike who work on this scale.
